Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Nabin is all set to take charge as national president of the party on January 20. His was the only name in the fray for the election.

As the election process began at the party headquarters in Delhi on Monday, 37 sets of nomination papers— 36 by state units and one by the BJP Parliamentary Party—were filed in favour of Nabin at party chief, all of which were found to be valid.

"I hereby announce that only one name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of national president of Bharatiya Janata Party," K Laxman, returning officer for the presidential election, said in a statement in the evening. He said the BJP national president's election process was initiated after the election of 30 state presidents out of 36 states, much above the required number for completing a minimum of 50 per cent of the states.

Among those who backed his nomination was Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Beside him, the proposers included senior union ministers JP Nadda, who is also the outgoing party president, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, all of whom have held the top party post in the past. The notification of the schedule of events for his election was announced and the electoral roll was published on January 16, 2026.

A five-term MLA from Bihar, who held the road construction portfolio in the state government, 45-year-old Nabin will be the youngest BJP chief so far, marking a generational shift in the party. He joined politics in 2006, following the death of his father Nabin Kishore Sinha, who was a BJP MLA. He also worked in the BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Bihar and at the national level, besides being made state in-charge of elections in Chhattisgarh, which the party won in 2023.

Within minutes of the BJP parliamentary board announcing his name as national working president of the party on December 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had posted on X “Shri Nitin Nabin Ji has distinguished himself as a hardworking karyakarta. He is a young and industrious leader with rich organisational experience and has an impressive record as MLA as well as minister in Bihar for multiple terms. He has diligently worked to fulfill people’s aspirations. He is known for his humble nature and grounded style of working. I am confident that his energy and dedication will strengthen our Party in the times to come. Congratulations to him on becoming the National Working President.”
