Is the photographer a voyeur or an observer?
Is the photographer a voyeur or an observer? Does one need a camera to be voyeuristic? Don’t people look at people and observe them all the time? Well, that’s exactly what I set out to do this year—explore the nature of candid photography and the way it is perceived. Unlike stalked work, in which photos are taken surreptitiously, these photographs of couples on a Mumbai ferry were shot with my subjects completely aware of the camera. It was a social experiment: to see, learn and study reactions of individuals within their private zones. As a street photographer, I tried to close in—enough to feel the surface tension between these bubbled spaces without bursting in. These photographs are the result.
