Solar power plants, battery-powered vehicles, waste management, water harvesting, sewage treatment plant and much more makes Subhartithe most sustainable campuses in north India
Decades ago Dr Bernard Shaw aptly quoted “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” This thought prompted us on a survey of educational organisations. Exploring and surfing brought us across Subharti, the Green Campus, and we got an amazing vis-à-vis with the vibrant and graceful CEO of Subharti University, Professor Dr.Shalya Raj who is spry to improve energy efficiency, conservation, enhancing environmental quality and creating healthy, living and learning milieus.
We were captivated by perfectly manicured gardens and the most photo-op-worthy set locations. Solar power plants, battery-powered vehicles, waste management, water harvesting, sewage treatment plant and much more makes Subhartithe most sustainable campuses in north India. The avid CEO Dr. Shalya Raj, briefed us about the sprawling campus that vividly announces its green initiatives and sustainable efforts. Hailing from a country with no empty promises, each commitment from Subharti is to keep a path away from a disastrous future. Incredulously the affluent university is better than envisaged with variegated collection bins for the e-waste and other garbage. In the wake of increasing pollution in water bodies, Professor Dr Shalya asserted that the university is heading towards a paperless university with an effective comprehensive software package. ‘KIOSKs’ are installed for students to check their profiles and make online entries, queries and payments etc. Silver tongue Subharti, divided into 8 green zones connotes the title of being the “District’s Green Champion” by its dextrous initiatives for setting up the Swachhta Action Plan and implementing best practices in the areas of hygiene, sanitation and greenery management. The commendation comes by engaging youth in environment protection; impactful in changing their behaviour and attitudes. The verdant campus has a felicitous horticulture department that maintains the parks and lawns of the university keeping company with Green Campus stratagems displayed exorbitantly at Akshayavat Nursery. It was phenomenal to note that Subharti, with its immense efforts, has evolved as a creator and generator of power and ecological resources. Biodegradable waste is collected for a bio compost project to be used in horticulture as a bio fertiliser and the green waste generated is used for vermicomposting. However, liquid waste is very circumspectly treated and recycled water is used for horticulture and sprinklers in university parks and grounds.
Subharti is an exceptionally beautiful campus; the architecture has contemporary and natural elements, featuring elegant buildings, paintings, figurines from the waste, and statuettes that are placed at various places in the university. This artistic sculpture prowess of the students is reflected right from the main entrance of the university made from waste material.
