Building the Future: Track Doubling, New Lines, and Metro Expansions
ExpansionsDuring FY 2023-24, the company commissioned a total of 666.04 km of railway lines. This included 70.19 km of New Line (NL), 24.53 km of Gauge Conversion (GC), 560.08 km of Doubling (DL), and 11.3 km of Kolkata Metro projects under the Metropolitan Transport Project (MTP) plan head.
Since its inception and up to March 2024, the company has successfully commissioned a cumulative project length of 15,658.85 km. This encompasses 626.22 km of New Line, 5,843.06 km of Doubling, 2,125.51 km of Gauge Conversion, 7,000.73 km of Railway Electrification, and 63.33 km under the MTP plan.
RVNL has taken a pioneering role in establishing five joint venture Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in collaboration with various stakeholders, including Ports, Mines, State Governments, and others, to implement rail connectivity projects. The company has contributed equity of Rs. 1,485.74 crore, enabling the implementation of projects worth Rs. 12,948 crore, with additional equity contributions from project partners and funds raised through financial institutions.
RVNL’s Noteworthy ProjectsPamban Bridge: An Engineering Marvel by RVNL
The iconic new Pamban Railway sea Bridge, an engineering marvel constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), serves as a critical link between Rameswaram Island and the Indian mainland. Old Pamban bridge served its purpose for over a century and then the Government of India commissioned this modernized version of the bridge, integrating cutting-edge technology. The new Pamban Bridge features a 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span, where the girder can be elevated by 17 meters, providing a 22-meter air draft to accommodate the passage of larger vessels. This lift span, the first of its kind in India, uses advanced technology to ensure seamless and efficient operations.

The structure is made of steel and high grade concrete, with corrosion-resistant measures ensuring longevity in the saline marine environment. The Bridge is also equipped with modern seismic and cyclonic resilience, suitable for the region’s environmental challenges. New bridge can support significantly higher loads, enabling freight transportation and facilitating economic growth.
The statutory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has already been undertaken and it is getting set for train operations very soon.
Kolkata Metro: A Game changer to foster economic growth & greener environment
Being one of the busiest metro network in India, Kolkata Metro is also among the longest operational metro network. An iconic landmark of the project was achieved on 30 December, 2022, when Hon’ble PM flagged the Joka-Taratala Metro section on the Purple Metro Corridor and passengers could access it from 2 January, 2023. Taratala to Majerhat work was also completed and commissioned on 15 March, 2024. Majerhat Metro Station is the first elevated Metro station in India which has been constructed over an existing Railway Yard and drainage canal. Work on Phase 3 of the Project is underway.
Vande Bharat (Sleeper Trainset): A significant leap in the nation’s Railway innovation
RVNL is a part of JV to manufacture Vande Bharat trains for Indian Railways at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur, Maharashtra. The Vande Bharat sleeper version will have 16 coaches which includes 11 AC 3-Tier coaches, 4 AC Two-Tier coaches and 1 First AC. The project envisages meticulous design of aesthetically appealing interiors and will be equipped with advanced features demonstrating an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in rail transportation.
RVNL bags the prestigious BharatNet Middle-Mile Network Project
RVNL bags a prestigious project from BSNL for Development (Creation, Upgradation and Operation & Maintenance) of Middle mile network of Bharat Net in Uttar Pradesh on Design Build Operate and Maintain (DBOM) Model worth over Rs. 13,200 crores.
BharatNet project will strengthen and extend the high speed broadband connectivity across rural areas thereby transforming digital access.
Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Rail Line: A Gateway to Growth and Connectivity in Uttarakhand
The 125-kilometer Broad Gauge (BG) railway line between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag is a transformative developmental project in Uttarakhand, undertaken by RVNL. This strategic rail link aims to provide convenient access to the state’s renowned pilgrimage sites as, it is the main feeder route to Indian Railways’ Char Dham Railway project which plans to connect the Char Dham pilgrimage shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath .It will help in fostering connectivity with emerging trade centres, catalysing economic growth in underserved regions.

By connecting key towns such as Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, and Karnaprayag across five districts—Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli—the project will significantly reduce travel time and transportation costs. Tunneling works at all 16 main and 12 escape tunnels is in progress and 189 km out of the total 213 kms of Tunneling has been completed.

Recently, 3 RVNL Projects, namely Pamban Bridge, Rail cum Road Bridge- Ghazipur, Majerhat Metro Station received recognition at SSMB Awards. Excellence in Railway Infrastructure Award at the ABP Live Infrastructure Conclave 2024 and the Roll of Honour Award for ‘Most Efficient and Profitable Navratna – Non-Manufacturing’ from Dalal Street Investment Journal was received by RVNL. RVNL was also awarded the Greentech Construction Safety Award, the SKOCH Gold Award, and the Quality Innovation Award at the 2nd Quality Convention 2023. Recognitions also include the Dun & Bradstreet PSU Award, Environment Leadership Award for the Indore Metro Project, India’s Best Company of the Year Award 2023, Rail Business Leader of the Year, and IEI Industry Excellence (Gold) Award 2023.
