NITI Aayog Crowns Punjab No. 1 In School Education: How Bhagwant Singh Mann's Reforms Delivered Results

The achievement places Punjab ahead of several traditionally strong performers, including Kerala, and signals a significant shift in the country's education landscape. For a state that has long battled concerns over educational migration and declining confidence in government schools, the ranking represents both recognition and a turning point.

Speaking while honouring meritorious students at the "Sitaare Zameen Te" programme in Chandigarh, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann described the achievement as the result of the collective efforts of students, teachers, parents and the government. He also reiterated his larger vision of making Punjab India's premier education destination, reducing the need for students to look abroad for quality education and opportunities.

From Reform to Recognition

Punjab’s rise to the top is the outcome of a sustained effort to strengthen public education. Over the last four years, the Bhagwant Singh Mann Government has focused on upgrading school infrastructure, improving learning outcomes, modernising classrooms and creating greater opportunities for students studying in government schools. The latest NITI Aayog assessment provides independent validation of these efforts, reinforcing Punjab's emergence as a national leader in school education.

The Mann Government's Defining Success Story

Among the government's various initiatives, education has emerged as one of its most visible success stories.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has consistently argued that quality education is the foundation of long-term social and economic progress. His government's approach has focused not only on improving facilities but also on building confidence among students who were often overlooked in the past.

According to Mann, government school students who once hesitated to compete are now excelling with confidence and ambition, reflecting a broader change in the educational ecosystem.

Beyond Infrastructure: Changing the Way Children Learn

A key pillar of Punjab's education transformation has been investment in teachers and learning practices. Teachers have been sent to countries such as Finland and Singapore for specialised training programmes, enabling them to bring global best practices into Punjab's classrooms. At the same time, the government has promoted knowledgebased education aimed at developing critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and practical skills rather than relying solely on rote learning.

This shift reflects a broader effort to prepare students for future challenges and a rapidly evolving global economy.

The Results Are Visible

The impact of these reforms is increasingly evident. This year, 359 students from Schools of Eminence and other government schools qualified for JEE Main, one of India's most competitive entrance examinations. The state has also partnered with Physics Wallah to provide free coaching support for examinations such as JEE and NEET, expanding access to quality preparation for students across Punjab. Parent-Teacher Meetings have been institutionalised across nearly 19,000 government schools, strengthening engagement between families and educators, while continued investments in infrastructure and Schools of Eminence are helping create better learning environments.

Punjab's Daughters Lead the Way

One of the most encouraging outcomes of Punjab's education reforms has been the performance of girls. This year, a majority of the top-performing students in Classes 8, 10 and 12 were girls, highlighting the growing opportunities available to young women across the state.

Initiatives such as transportation facilities for girl students and improved school infrastructure have helped make education more accessible and inclusive.

A State Investing in Talent

For decades, educational migration shaped the aspirations of many Punjabi families. The Bhagwant Singh Mann Government is now working to change that narrative by creating an education ecosystem capable of nurturing talent within the state itself.

Punjab's No. 1 ranking in the NITI Aayog assessment is more than a statistical achievement. It is evidence of a broader transformation underway in the state's education system. For Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, it represents proof that sustained investment, institutional reform and a clear vision can deliver measurable outcomes.

With Punjab now leading the nation in school education, the state's education revolution is increasingly being seen as one of the defining achievements of the Bhagwant Singh Mann Government.
