The Bhakra Nangal project, on which work was initiated soon after India won its independence, even today stands as a symbol of the nation’s move towards prosperity. It transformed lives of farmers and brought light into homes. But did you know that the 150,000 hp Francis waterwheels for the Bhakra Nangal Power project were supplied by Hitachi?
Hitachi’s association with India started in 1933, when it introduced the electric fan to Indian consumers. It set up its first office in 1935, and is today celebrating 80 years of its journey in India. Over these eight decades, it has touched the lives of multitudes of Indians through its contributions across a large spectrum of sectors spanning transportation, power, telecom & IT, construction equipment, electronics, functional materials & components and financial services.
Hitachi’s commitment to ‘Make in India’ and use India as a man- ufacturing base has strong precedence. In the construction ma- chinery business, in 2014, Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company began exports of hydraulic excavators to Africa and the Middle East, designed and produced in India based on specifications for emerging countries. In addition, Hitachi Hi-Rel Pow- er Electronics started exports of power electronics products, in- cluding inverters and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies), to the Middle East and ASEAN countries in 2013. And this trend continues.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Japan, the latter committed to doubling its investment in India over the next five years to $35 billion, in a bid to support India’s growth ambitions and further strengthen long-established ties.
Given this increased engagement between the two countries, and Hitachi’s long relationship with India, it isn’t surprising that the diversified conglomerate has decided to significantly enhance its participation in the country’s development.
Earlier this year, Hitachi unveiled a plan to strengthen its relationship with India by contributing to social infrastructure de- velopment through its Social Innovation Business, which com- bines the group’s infrastructure capabilities with advanced IT solutions. Hitachi’s wide band of capabilities, spanning sectors such as power, construction, automotive, medical equipments and information & communication products and solutions make it ideally placed to contribute to India’s growth and development.
Challenging projects backed by the government like the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Jan Yojana have seen positive response with near `21,000 crore of deposits being collected under these accounts. However, scaling up even further to meet the intended goals and managing the data and security of these accounts will require increased investment in the right kind of IT infrastructure and solutions. Hitachi is well placed to contribute in such areas with its decades of experience across several continents.
The Digitial India initiative and the plan for 100 Smart Cities are other key areas where Hitachi can play a pivotal role. In fact, the Japanese major is already engaging with several State Govern- ments and the Centre on the development of smart cities. As India embarks on its journey to build a more robust and eq- uitable economy—driven by the confluence of on-ground tech- nology and digital intelligence—Hitachi pledges an even greater commitment to its cause.
