Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham: A game changing university
Open
16 May, 2019
What game-changing approach has this university adopted in the last 15 years that has led to its consistent performance at the top? In April, 2019, the President of India announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2019 for best universities in India. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was awarded the eighth rank. This is the third consecutive year for Amrita being adjudged as one of the “Top 10 Universities in India”. In 2018 too, Amrita had bagged the eighth rank and in 2017, the ninth rank.
The NIRF list of best universities is based on several parameters: teaching, learning & resources, research & professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach & inclusivity, placement records and perception. Undoubtedly, in all these parameters, Amrita’s performance is brilliant. This is one reason why over 20,000 students enroll for pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Engineering, Business, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Journalism, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences, Teacher Education, Microbiology, Hospital Management, Visual Media Studies, Mass Communication, Social Work, Nanosciences and Ayurveda. More importantly, and distinguishably game-changing are the value systems, which are nurtured and drilled deep at this research-oriented institution of higher learning. These values help in wholesome learning as well as character building along with knowledge enrichment. The greatest reason for this is that the world-renowned humanitarian, Sadguru Mata Amritanandamayi Devi is the founder and Chancellor of Amrita.
“We facilitate students with three career options – Employment, Higher Studies and Self-employment. While the majority opt for the excellent campus placement opportunities, others are provided inputs for higher learning initiatives in case they intend to pursue higher studies in India or abroad. Those who want to start their own ventures get the relevant inputs from Amrita Centre for Entrepreneurship.” – C. Parameswaran, Director – CIR, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

Another game-changer at Amrita is the Live-in-Labs programme. It is a multidisciplinary experiential learning programme involving students and faculty from Amrita as well as collaborating universities to apply learning in real-world village settings for several weeks. This facilitates the research, development, and deployment of sustainable solutions for current challenges faced by rural communities in India. It also complements the research being done by more than 1,400 faculty members at Amrita, of which 800 are PhDs, qualified from great institutions like the llTs, NlTs, llMs, llSc., TIFR, etc. in India, and numerous top-ranking international universities abroad. The final game-changing element is that along with life skills imparted to students at Amrita, they are provided with mentoring inputs specifically in terms of career choices.
