It delivers ‘high resolution’ audio on the go
The pioneer of portable music, Sony, has launched its premium ZX2 Walkman that delivers ‘high definition’ music—reproducing the subtle nuances of sound that one can hear only in a studio. The ZX2 is big and it feels solid in your hands. This is not a product for the nimble. The Walkman has 128 gigabytes of storage built into the device, and also a slot for a microSD card. You charge it via a USB port, which doubles as a data transfer point, and there is a gold ring where you connect your headphones.
The ZX2 features a 4-inch screen that lets you control the player. The player runs on Android and lets you install other Android apps too. Its battery is designed to run 60 hours of continuous MP3 file playback, but if you choose to play higher resolution files, the play time comes down to about 33 hours—still long enough.
Sony uses great electronics and manufacturing techniques to make sure that the sound that this Walkman puts out is pure—from using large coil resistors for low distortion and low resistance on its headphone output, to a film condenser that minimises interference from vibrations and electrical sources. The chassis is made of gold-plated copper to help produce clear and powerful sound in the low frequency range, while the exterior features a machined aluminium frame.
The ZX2 Walkman supports digital music files up to 192 Khz/24 bit, in several file formats including MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV and ALAC with DSD. It also supports a brand new audio technology from Sony called LDAC that allows you to enjoy high-quality wireless audio via Bluetooth on supported speakers.
