A monolith smart TV that looks good and is packed with nifty features—but where’s the Bluetooth?
The HX850 series of TVs from Sony are beautiful to look at. This 46 inch LED TV is capable of producing full HD 3D pictures with life-like appeal. Though Sony has persisted with active shutter glasses that need to be charged, these new glasses are slightly bigger and feel more comfortable to wear for extended periods. Also, they did not bother me as much as some of the older models.
To improve the TV watching experience, Sony has employed what it calls an X-Reality Pro Picture engine. It analyses each scene in the video you are watching and adjusts its colour and contrast automatically for an optimal viewing experience. This TV has another nice feature that Sony calls Motionflow XR 800. This enhances the quality of videos by bumping up their frame rate to 800 fps, even if the original video is in 24 or 30 fps. The TV employs advanced LED backlighting with high frame rate panels to achieve this result. Further, it inserts multiple replicated frames in between individual frames of the video to improve picture sharpness. The result of all this technical wizardry is improved picture quality and smoother motion sequences. The effect is most visible when you watch high-speed motion scenes, such as an F1 race or action sequences from movies like The Matrix.
The TV is loaded with a plethora of apps and has a host of connectors on its rear and side as well. This smart TV is Skype certified, though you will have to buy a webcam separately. It ships with two 3D glasses, and if you want more you have to buy them from the market.
While this is a pretty smart TV, it is irksome that it does not have Bluetooth built-in. I would have liked to hook it up with my wireless keyboard to browse the internet. Overall, if you are looking for a TV that not only looks beautiful but performs well too, this is a great option.
