It is big, beautiful and one of the best Android phones around today
When I heard the name Butterfly, I wanted to laugh out. Doubly loud when I heard that HTC wanted to call it ‘the ultimate smartphone’.
But I admit, this is a really nice phone. It has a 1080 pixel screen with 440 pixels per inch, which is far sharper than the Retina display. Its screen is protected by Gorilla Glass2, which is 20 per cent thinner than its predecessor. The 12.7 cm screen is ideal for in-hand HD experience.
HTC has spent a lot of time designing this phone, and it looks and feels beautiful. The company has also paid a lot of attention to the hardware. It is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor that runs at 1.5 GHz and has 2 GB of RAM. You interact with the phone using HTC’s Sense 4+ UI, which runs on top of its Android 4.1 OS. The additional UI layer improves user experience. It also helps that the phone has an all-day battery. Storage can be expanded with a microSD card, and you get 25 GB space free on Dropbox when you register the phone online.
The Butterfly has interesting cameras. Its rear camera has a 28 mm wide-angle lens with an f/2 aperture, so your photos come out fine even in low light. The 8 megapixel shooter has a five-level automatic flash to reduce the ‘flash burn’ in images that are shot too close to the subject. The front camera is 2.1 megapixels.
The sound system is neat too. Like previous HTCs, it has Beats Audio, besides a built-in headset amplifier and a dedicated amplifier for the rear speaker.
You may feel a little shortchanged with this phone because it does not have NFC or 4G capabilities. But honestly speaking, it might take another half decade before these technologies begin to impact our lives in India.
If you are okay with the phone’s 5 inch form factor, it is indeed one of the best Androids out there.
