At just 11.8 kg, this hi-tech foldable bike is a breeze not only to ride, but also to carry along
Recently I bought a Dahon Vitesse D7, and while on rides to India Gate in Delhi and on my travels across airports, I have been stopped by people who think I am going crazy, or by others to congratulate me for my ‘green contribution’. I thought I must share my assessment of this easy-rider with you.
Well, the Dahon Vitesse D7 is not the only foldable bike, but it certainly is one of the best foldable bikes available in India. The company’s advertisment claimed that you can fold the bike from full position and vice-versa in under 15 seconds, and I took that with a pinch of salt—only to buy the bike and realise, yes you can. Under 15 seconds.
So, what is so hi-tech about it? Well, that’s where Dahon has gone ahead and taken a number of patents, though each of the add-ons needs to be ordered separately at an additional cost: from a seat post that can act as an air pump to inflate the tyres and a USB charger that stores energy from the dynamo, and can be used to power any USB-powered device, to an internal gear hub that shields the gears from dust and grime. Also on offer are an iPhone 4 holder with shock absorbers, an iPhone application that lets you map your route and see what speed you are travelling at, and a patented bag to cover your bike with ease.
The D7 also features a 7-speed gear shifter (SRAM MRX Comp Shifters) and 20 inch diameter wheels. It only weighs 11.8 kg, making it easy to carry even on planes. It can take a maximum load of 105 kg; the frame is made of 7005 butted aluminium alloy, which is an aerospace grade aluminium, thus making it light and strong at the same time. The seat position and overall bike design is perfect for a spin outside when the weather permits, and I have personally been able to ride the bike up to 27 kmph, which is quite amazing for a portable bike.
