Canon’s first touchscreen-enabled DSLR
I recently went to Rishikesh, and took along this Canon 650D (with an 18–135 mm lens) to take pictures.
The 650D has a new 18 megapixel sensor, which Canon claims is a Gapless Microlens Array. Its high-speed hybrid auto focus system ensures that you get faster shutter speeds. It also has an ISO range of 100 to 12,800. The 3 inch swivel touchscreen LCD is nice and bright.
It is a good camera for action and sports photography. We took pictures with it while pedalling downhill at 50 kmph, and the photos still came out really very well.
The 650D is not an entry-level DSLR, it’s more of a pro-am. It offers you the features that a professional needs, but at a price point that an amateur would prefer. However, if you are new to photography, you may want to go for the Nikon D3200, which is an entry-level DSLR. It is not only priced significantly lower than the 650D but also has a higher megapixel sensor. But there is more to a camera than the megapixels on its sensor. Pictures with the Nikon can turn out very grainy beyond the ISO 1600 mark. And though you will get the same problem with this Canon if you test its ISO 12,800 limit, I found its photos fine till the ISO 3,200 mark. The other issue I have is that in its video mode, it picks up the sound of the lens’ auto focus motor.
Overall, it is a well-rounded camera. The touchscreen makes it user-friendly to the smartphone generation. New users can spend more time clicking pictures than figuring out what to do with all the dials and buttons on the camera.
