Bluetooth handsfree kits make a lot of sense today, especially as more and more of our conversations take place over mobile phones. Handsfree units are an essential accessory for new generation smartphones, which play podcasts, read text messages, and even allow you to dictate messages with their speech-to-text software. All this is better done over a handsfree, rather than while holding a phone to the ear. But you still have to decide if you want to spend Rs 8,888 for this convenience.
Bose products are all about technology. This one features a very good digital signal processor (DSP). It blocks out unwanted noise, which can interfere with a conversation when you are at an airport, railway station or even in the comfort of your office. Other proprietary technologies, such as its TriPort Acoustic Structure and Bose Adaptive Audio Adjustment, ensure that there is no need to adjust volume levels constantly, nor strain to hear a caller.
At just about 12 gm, the headset is light and performs every bit like a Bose. It comes with a carry case, and two additional ear tips. You can choose between small- or medium-sized tips, which are designed for long-wear comfort and are much better than any other tips I have seen so far. The handsfree kit has two LEDs: one indicates whether a call is in progress, the other indicates battery status. On a full charge, the battery lasts 4.5 hours of talktime and about 100 hours of standby.
The battery time of this device is not impressive, but save your cribbing for this next feature. You can’t switch between ears. You have to buy either a left-ear or right-ear handsfree, and then you are stuck with that choice for the life of the device. Another hitch is that it has no over-the-ear clip. It is great for home use, office use and even in-car use. But you can’t wear it while running or cycling.
And though I appear to run down this gadget, the fact is, I love it. It is priced steep for a headset. But it is not just another headset.
