In a political turn that few would have wagered on even half a decade ago, West Bengal now stands on the cusp of a dramatic power shift, marked by the meteoric rise of Suvendu Adhikari from a Trinamool Congress loyalist to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial face in the state.

Once the poster boy of the Trinamool Congress and a frontline figure in Mamata Banerjee’s anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram, Adhikari’s political evolution has been as striking as it is consequential.

On Friday, he was elected as the BJP Legislative Party Leader in West Bengal, paving the way for him to become the state’s first BJP Chief Minister.

Adhikari’s ascent has been underlined by decisive electoral victories. He not only reprised his earlier win over Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram but expanded his margin significantly in the 2026 polls.

More notably, he defeated the Trinamool Congress supremo in her stronghold of Bhabanipur by 15,105 votes, signalling a political shift few had anticipated.

He is set to take oath as Chief Minister on Saturday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

The announcement of his leadership came from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who addressed a gathering in Kolkata and described Adhikari as central to the BJP’s vision of “Sonar Bangla”.

Shah said, "In a way, due to your faith, the central figure of today's celebrations and the future Chief Minister of Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari," as he began his address after the announcement.

He thanked the people of the state for their support and outlined the party's commitment to fulfilling their expectations.

What Did Amit Shah Say About Suvendu Adhikari’s Victory in Bengal?

"First of all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the people of Bengal with joined hands. The atmosphere that had been created since the Communist era was deepened by Mamata Banerjee, and it was almost impossible to cast your vote there…,” the Home Minister said.

I am very thankful for the huge victory that the people of Bengal have given us by trusting the BJP and our leader, Narendra Modi.

"I also want to say on behalf of the party that the expectations that the people of Bengal have placed in us, based on which they have given us this mandate, we will do our best to uphold that trust to the fullest," he added.

Adhikari’s rise also aligns with the leadership template articulated by Shah during the campaign.

From a trusted protege within the Trinamool Congress, he has recast himself as one of its most formidable opponents, ultimately unseating the very leader he once followed within a span of five years.
