
Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most iconic and versatile playback singers, died in Mumbai on Sunday. She was 92.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over her demise and paid tribute to her unparalleled contribution to Indian music.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known. Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world,” the PM wrote in a post on X.
"Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance. I'll always cherish the interactions I've had with her,” he added.
"My condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers. She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people's lives," PM Modi concluded.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid tribute, describing her passing as the end of a golden era in Indian music.

"That golden note of music has fallen silent today, the one that connected generations and shaped every emotion into melody. The passing of Asha Bhosle ji is an irreplaceable loss to the world of Indian music,” she wrote on X.
She added that while her voice may have fallen silent, her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artists and music lovers.
"In Asha Tai's voice, it was as if life itself smiled, every song carrying a story that transcended time. Her departure feels like the end of a golden era, but her dedication will forever inspire generations to come,” the Delhi CM added.
Extending her condolences, she said, "May God grant peace to the departed soul and strength to her family and admirers to bear this sorrow."
Politician and actor Hema Malini shared an emotional note on Instagram, recalling her personal connection with the singer and the impact of her voice on her career.
"Asha Tai no more! I just can't believe how someone so full of life, she who lent so much vivacity and character to her songs has left us grieving,” Malini posted.
“It is a huge loss for Maharashtra and for the whole of India that can never be compensated or replaced ever," Malini wrote.
Songs such as 'Bechara Dil Kya Kare', 'Dil Usse Do Jo Jaan De De', and 'O Sathi Chal', picturised on Hema Malini, were sung by Asha Bhosle.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu also expressed grief, calling her passing a deep personal and national loss to the world of music.
In a post on X, the Delhi LG said the iconic singer's voice and artistry defined generations and would continue to inspire music lovers across the world.
"Deeply saddened by the losing of a legendary icon like Asha Bhosle ji," he wrote.
He further highlighted her contribution to Indian music, noting her unmatched versatility and emotional depth.
"Her extraordinary voice and timeless artistry have defined generations of music lovers," Sandhu said.
He extended condolences to her family and admirers, saying his thoughts are with those mourning her loss.
"My heartfelt thoughts are with her family, admirers, and the entire music fraternity. Om Shanti," he added.
