The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged toward a dominant victory in Assam on Monday, with early counting trends indicating that the party has crossed the two-thirds mark in the 126-member Assembly, firmly positioning the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for a return to power.

Data from the Election Commission of India showed the BJP leading on 77 seats, comfortably ahead of the Indian National Congress, which was ahead in 25. Allies including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) were leading on 10 seats each, strengthening the NDA’s overall tally well beyond the majority mark of 64.

With the alliance building a clear lead, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appeared set for a third consecutive term as counting progressed across the state.

In Jalukbari, Sarma maintained a strong lead over Congress candidate Bidisha Neog, polling 11,821 votes and leading by 7,748 votes after early rounds of counting.

The BJP also posted commanding leads in key urban constituencies. In Dispur, party candidate Pradyut Bordoloi was ahead with 29,838 votes, opening a wide margin over Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami, who trailed significantly.

In Jorhat, however, the contest remained more closely watched. BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami was leading with 27,903 votes, maintaining an advantage of over 9,000 votes against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, who was trailing in the early rounds.

Smaller parties accounted for a limited share of the trends, with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leading in two seats, while the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Raijor Dal were ahead in one seat each.

The early trends underscore a strong performance by the BJP across regions, consolidating its position as the dominant political force in the state.

At the Congress office in Assam, preparations made in anticipation of a closer contest appeared premature, with decorators reportedly asked to leave as initial results began to reflect a widening gap.

While counting is still underway and final results are yet to be declared, the momentum in early trends points to a decisive mandate in favour of the ruling alliance.
