A close aide of West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was fatally shot in the Madhyamgram area near Kolkata on Wednesday night, triggering tension in the locality and prompting a police investigation.

The victim, identified as Chandranath Rath, served as the BJP leader's executive assistant, reported Times of India.

According to initial inputs, the incident involved an exchange of fire in which at least four rounds were reportedly fired before Rath was fatally shot. He succumbed to his bullet injuries after being attacked by the assailants.

As per an India Today report, Rath was shot at close range.

Details about the assailants and the exact sequence of events remain unclear at this stage. Police have launched an investigation into the attack.

The killing comes amid a series of violent incidents reported across West Bengal following the BJP's sweeping electoral victory, in which the party secured 207 of the 294 Assembly seats, bringing an end to the Trinamool Congress' 15-year rule in the state.
