Actor-turned-politician Vijay opened his electoral debut with an early lead in Tamil Nadu, as initial counting trends on Monday showed his party gaining a foothold in a contest long dominated by established alliances.
Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was ahead by 1,669 votes in the Tiruchirappalli East constituency at the end of the first round of counting. He is also contesting from Perambur, making his performance central to assessing the party’s first major electoral test.
The early lead, though limited in scope, signals a potential disruption in Tamil Nadu’s traditional two-front political structure, historically shaped by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the AIADMK-led alliance, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In Tiruchirappalli East, DMK candidate Inigo Irudayaraj trailed Vijay in the opening round, according to early counting data. Across the state, several TVK candidates were also leading in initial trends, including contenders in Tiruchirappalli West, Srivaikuntam, Thiruvottiyur and Radhapuram, suggesting the party may be gaining early traction.
Counting for all 234 assembly constituencies began at 8 a.m. with postal ballots, followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counting from 8:30 a.m. Officials said round-wise updates were being uploaded in real time on the Election Commission’s digital platforms.
Despite TVK’s early momentum in select seats, broader trends indicated the DMK-led alliance remained ahead in multiple constituencies, in line with exit poll projections that had forecast its return to power. Postal ballot counts from key constituencies reinforced that pattern. In Chepauk-Triplicane, DMK secured 21 postal votes compared to AIADMK’s seven and TVK’s six, while similar leads were seen in Harbour and RK Nagar.

Outside counting centres, supporters gathered early, particularly near TVK’s headquarters in Chennai, as tight security arrangements were enforced across the city. At venues such as Queen Mary’s College, officials conducted the process under layered security and strict access control.
Vijay’s entry into politics has injected a new variable into Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape, turning what was expected to be a largely predictable contest into a more complex, three-cornered race.
With multiple rounds of counting still underway, early leads are expected to shift, but the initial numbers suggest that while the DMK remains structurally strong, TVK’s debut may begin to reshape the state’s political equations.
