Amid a chill in India-United States ties, Prime Minister Natendra Modi will not travelling to the United States for his month for the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.
After his return from visits to Japan and China, the PM will be busy with domestic priorities that include the reform push he outlined in his Independence Day speech on August 15.
Usually a visit to New York would have seen Modi interact with several world leaders. In the current circumstances the possibility of a bilateral meeting between Modi and US President Donald Trump does not seem likely.
Modi has hit back strongly at Trump’s decision to slap India with an additional 25 per cent penalty for buying Russian oil describing the move as economic selfishness.
In his public speeches and in meetings with foreign leaders the PM has pursued cooperation in the development and manufacture of semiconductors needed for industrial processes.
These policies are intended to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities.
