Increasing signals are coming from the United States, especially President Donald Trump, that it will join Israel against Iran.
Trump left the G7 summit in Canada early on June 17 because he wanted to monitor the Middle East conflict. He dropped a first hint with a post in Truth Social railing against French president Emmanuel Macron for saying that he was mediating a ceasefire. Instead, Trump wrote that something bigger was being planned. ‘ He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong,’ he wrote.
There was then a post on the social media platform X by United States vice president JD Vance which suggested that Trump might be making a decision on getting more involved against Iran. It said, ‘The president has made clear that Iran cannot have uranium enrichment. And he said repeatedly that this would happen one of two ways–the easy way or the “other” way.’ The most direct hint was by Trump himself later with a post where he revealed that they knew where Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was hiding and it would be easy to take him out but were not doing it for the moment. He used the nomenclature ‘we’ and ‘our’ while writing it, as if the United States and Israel were one unit. He followed that with another short ultimatum that said, ‘Unconditional Surrender’.
The import of all this is being seen as US gearing up to participate in the bombing campaign, most likely in dropping their 30000-pound bunker buster bomb on the Iranian nuclear facility Fordow. It is hidden deep underground in a mountain where Israel cannot reach. The US stealth bomber B2 is needed to drop the bomb.
Increasing US involvement is also being signalled by the amount of armament it is moving to that region, including aircraft carriers. Domestically, however, Trump is seeing resistance to the idea from part of his political base. Popular right-wing personalities like Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon have come out against US involvement in foreign wars, a position that Trump himself has voiced in his run up to power.
