At least 28 people have been killed after terrorists opened fire on civilians, especially tourists, in the holiday destination of Pahalgam in South Kashmir on April 22, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a visit to Saudi Arabia, to assert that those behind the heinous act will be brought to justice.
“I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” the Prime Minister posted on X, adding, “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable, and it will get even stronger.”
The timing of the attack coincides with the first official visit of US Vice-President JD Vance to India and comes ahead of the busy tourist season in Pahalgam, which is the base for the popular Amarnath yatra.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also lashed out at the terrorists, who, the police said, fired from close range. Meanwhile, a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Abdullah posted on X: “I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased.”
Abdullah said the final death toll is still being ascertained.
According to officials, the Prime Minister held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has left for Srinagar to hold a high-level meeting to review the situation and security arrangements. Before Shah left for Srinagar, he posted on X, expressing anguish. “My thoughts are with the family members of the deceased. Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared, and we will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences. Briefed PM Shri @narendramodiJi about the incident and held a meeting with the concerned officials via video conferencing. Will shortly leave for Srinagar to hold an urgent security review meeting with all the agencies,” the home minister posted on X.
Even as locals in Pahalgam came out on the streets to protest the heinous attacks, Dr S Jaishankar said on X, “Condemn the cowardly terror attack in Pahalgam. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. Pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
