Marking World Environment Day with a call for collective environmental action, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the Aravalli Green Wall Project, an ambitious ecological initiative aimed at reforesting the 700-km-long Aravalli mountain range, which spans Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Prime Minister also expanded the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, an initiative encouraging citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers, by planting a sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in the capital.
“Today, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, we strengthened the #EkPedMaaKeNaam initiative with a special tree plantation drive. I planted a sapling at the Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi. This is also a part of our effort to reforest the Aravalli range—the Aravalli Green Wall project,” Modi wrote in a post on X.
Highlighting the ecological significance and vulnerability of the Aravalli range, Modi noted, “It is widely known that the Aravalli range is one of the oldest on our planet, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. The past several years have brought to the fore several environmental challenges relating to this range, which our government is committed to mitigating.”
The project aims to tackle a series of interlinked environmental challenges, including land degradation, dust storms, desertification and groundwater depletion. “Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range,” Modi said. “We are going to work with the respective local administrations and going to emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more.”
The government plans to employ both traditional and innovative planting methods, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where space is limited. Plantation efforts will be geo-tagged and monitored through the Meri LiFE portal, part of India’s broader climate-conscious lifestyle campaign.
In his message, the Prime Minister also issued a direct appeal to younger citizens: “I call upon the youth of our nation to take part in this movement and add to our planet’s green cover.”
The Aravalli Green Wall Project forms part of India’s larger environmental strategy, particularly in the run-up to its commitments under international climate agreements.
