Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain, days after his wedding, sending shockwaves through the football world. Jota, who was 28, is survived by his wife and three children.
According to Spanish media reports, the crash occurred on July 2 near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora province where Jota’s car reportedly suffered a tyre “blowout” before catching fire. His younger brother, André, 26, also died in the accident, reports said. Both were declared dead at the scene. The accident is under investigation, according to Spanish media reports.

Jota, who married long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, had been vacationing in Spain following Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph last month.
Jota had scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club, helping the Reds secure several trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Tributes poured in from across the football-playing and viewing world, with Liverpool FC, Portugal’s football federation, teammates and fans mourning his sudden loss.
Liverpool released a brief statement to the media, saying, “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. He was not only a phenomenal footballer but also a beloved teammate and friend. Our thoughts are with his family at this incredibly difficult time.”
