Sterling Point: A Summer of Discoveries
It’s summer. Life in New York seems less than beguiling, and Wharton has turned her down. For 17-year-old Annie (Ella Rubin), the remote lake island in Canada left to her by an estranged grandfather seems attractive. Off she goes, without telling her father whose relationship with her said late grandfather was unhappy.
It is here Annie finds friendship, love, memories of her mother, but most importantly herself. Rubin is like a young Anne Hathaway, and looks especially beautiful when miserable. As she confronts truths about her family, she also discovers her half sister (spoiler alert). Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) is the spitting image of her mother and has no intention of sharing her grandfather’s island, and more importantly, her cottage. She feels that Ella, who was adopted along with her twin brother Connor, has stolen her life.
Young adult romances like Off Campus and The Summer I Turned Pretty, have taken over our lives, and Sterling Point arrives like a summer breeze, calming, quiet, and has a slow burn with enough yearning for a fire alarm. Ellis (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie) a local boy, is the perfect summer romance for Annie while the presence of two men, her father Steven (Jay Duplass), and her late mother’s boyfriend, Joe (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), lends a solidity to their dreamy lives. How does it end? More importantly, why does it end?
