A flight from Los Angeles to New York has put actor Selma Blair back in the headlines for reasons far removed from her Hollywood career. The Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde star was arrested after an alleged disturbance aboard a Delta Air Lines flight on Sunday, October 11. But as the case unfolds, it has also revived memories of another frightening flight incident from 2016: one Blair herself described as a “total psychotic blackout”.

The two episodes occurred nearly a decade apart. While the circumstances reported so far are different, the earlier incident offers context for understanding why the latest allegations have drawn so much attention.

What happened aboard Selma Blair’s Delta flight?

According to Reuters, flight attendants reported a physically abusive passenger aboard the flight travelling from Los Angeles to New York. Blair was identified as the suspect and taken into custody at John F Kennedy International Airport after the aircraft landed.

Two flight attendants reported injuries, with one taken to hospital, Reuters reported. During her subsequent court appearance in Queens, Blair was also accused of kicking a police officer involved in her arrest and a nurse at the hospital where she was taken for evaluation.

Blair has pleaded not guilty to the assault charges relating to the alleged attacks on the officer and nurse. She was released on $20,000 bail. She also faces federal proceedings connected to the alleged conduct aboard the aircraft.

Her representative said Blair had experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged behaviour and that she was in a stable condition after receiving medical attention. Her lawyer reportedly told the court that missed medication doses and a head injury contributed to confusion and disorientation. These remain claims made on her behalf, not established findings about what happened.

Why did Selma Blair’s 2016 plane incident make headlines?

The latest episode has brought renewed scrutiny to an incident from June 2016, when Blair was returning to Los Angeles from Cancun, Mexico, after a trip with her young son and his father, Jason Bleick. During that flight, Blair experienced an alarming episode and was reportedly removed from the aircraft on a stretcher before being taken to hospital. The incident attracted widespread media attention, prompting the actor to publicly explain what she said had happened.

In a statement to Vanity Fair at the time, Blair said she had mixed alcohol with medication, which caused her to black out and say and do things she deeply regretted. She apologised to the passengers and crew who had been affected, saying she took the incident seriously.

What did Selma Blair say about her earlier blackout?

Blair later spoke about the episode during an appearance on The Talk in October 2016. She described it as a “total psychotic blackout” and said she had been going through a difficult period. She explained that she had consumed a glass of wine and taken a pill she believed was something she had used before.

The actor called the experience frightening and said her behaviour had been out of character. She also said she no longer drank alcohol and acknowledged the seriousness of what had happened. Her account was an explanation of the 2016 incident, not evidence of what caused the latest episode. The circumstances of the current case will have to be established separately.

How does the latest case change the conversation around Blair?

Blair has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018 and about living with the condition. Her health has again entered the public discussion following the latest incident, particularly after her representative cited a medical emergency.

But the distinction between the two flight episodes matters. Blair’s earlier account provides a documented history of a previous in-flight emergency; it does not establish that the same factors were involved this time. Nor does her multiple sclerosis diagnosis, by itself, explain the alleged conduct.

For now, the case remains before the courts, and Blair has denied the assault charges by pleading not guilty. The renewed interest in her 2016 experience may help explain why the latest news has resonated, but the facts of the new allegations must stand on their own.
