Ramayana Box Office: Can Ranbir Kapoor’s epic rewrite Indian cinema’s biggest records?

The central triangle of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana brings together three of Indian cinema’s biggest names. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya whose journey forms the heart of the epic. Sai Pallavi portrays Sita, Rama’s wife, while Kannada star Yash aka Rocking Star takes on the role of Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka.
The three characters are at the centre of the conflict that drives the story, from Rama and Sita’s exile to Ravana’s abduction of Sita and the eventual battle for Lanka. But the story consists of other important characters too. As the film gears up to arrive in theatres, here is a guide to who plays whom:

Coping with an explosive Middle East
Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana
The supporting cast brings two more much-loved characters to the screen. Sunny Deol plays Hanuman, Rama’s devoted follower and a key figure in the search for Sita and the war against Ravana.
Ravie Dubey portrays Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother who accompanies him and Sita into exile. The actor recently received a character poster of his own, with the makers describing Lakshmana as “A devoted brother. A fearless warrior. Rama's shield.” Dubey has called the opportunity to play the character an emotional experience.
Arun Govil returns to the Ramayana universe as King Dasharatha
One of the film’s most interesting casting choices is Arun Govil. The actor, remembered by generations for playing Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s television adaptation, now appears as King Dasharatha, Rama’s father and the ruler of Ayodhya.
The royal family also includes Indira Krishnan as Queen Kaushalya, Rama’s mother; Lara Dutta as Queen Kaikeyi, whose demand leads to Rama’s exile; and Sonal Jha as Queen Sumitra, mother of Lakshmana and Shatrughan. Sheeba Chaddha plays Manthara, Kaikeyi’s confidante whose counsel influences the events leading to the exile.
Adinath Kothare plays Bharat, while Nitish Sharma portrays Shatrughan, Rama’s youngest brother.
Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh and Vivek Oberoi join Lanka’s royal family
The world of Lanka has its own substantial ensemble. Kajal Aggarwal plays Mandodari, Ravana’s wife, while Rakul Preet Singh portrays his sister Surpanakha. Vivek Oberoi appears as Vidyutjihva, Surpanakha’s husband.
Ravana’s family also includes Shobana as his mother Kaikesi, Harish Uthaman as his brother Vibhishana, and Faisal Malik as Kumbhakarna. Saurabh Sachdeva plays Mareech, the demon whose golden-deer disguise becomes central to Sita’s abduction.
Anupam Kher as Jatayu, Kunal Kapoor as Indra: Who plays the divine characters?
The film’s supporting mythological figures include Anupam Kher, who lends his voice to Jatayu, the vulture king who attempts to rescue Sita from Ravana. Kunal Kapoor plays Indra, king of the gods. Shishir Sharma appears as Sage Vashishtha, Ajinkya Deo as Sage Vishwamitra and Mukesh Tiwari as Sage Agastya.
When is Ramayana releasing and who is making the two-part epic?
Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in association with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations and DNEG, Ramayana is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The first instalment releases worldwide on November 5, 2026, with the second part planned for Diwali 2027.
The music brings together A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, marking a major collaboration for the production. After a Mumbai premiere on November 3, the film has now opened in theatres, bringing its ensemble cast and the familiar story of Rama, Sita and Ravana to the big screen.
Box Office Prediction for Ramayana
The expectations surrounding Ramayana extend far beyond a strong opening weekend. With a reported budget of around Rs 2,000 crore for the first instalment, the film has an enormous box-office mountain to climb. According to Hindustan Times, the film had recorded around Rs 77 crore in domestic advance bookings for its opening weekend by November 4, including approximately Rs 33 crore for its first day. Overseas pre-sales stood at $5.6 million, taking worldwide advance bookings to an estimated Rs 125 crore.
Trade experts quoted by PTI have projected an opening-day collection of Rs 75–100 crore across languages, while lifetime estimates range from Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 3,000 crore if the film connects with audiences.
But can it overtake blockbusters such as Pushpa 2, Baahubali 2 and Dhurandhar: The Revenge? That remains a much bigger challenge. For a film of this scale, a spectacular first day will make headlines; sustaining that momentum over several weeks will determine whether it enters the highest-grossing league.
