Movie Review: The Rajasaab: The Prabhas Pastiche

/1 min read
Despite Prabhas's towering presence and Sanjay Dutt's role as an evil ghost, the film fails to impress, relying on tired tropes and lacking the charm of real settings and characters

PRABHAS IS A genre by himself. His movies require him to be at least a foot taller than the chorus in dances; have dialogues that challenge the most patient listener; and just in case we’re likely to forget, at least one song that celebrates the Rebel Star and the Pan Indian Star.

The scripts are similar except the antagonist and the setting which keep changing given the popularity of the genres. Here it is the horror comedy, a genre now in its death throes. So naturally there is an evil ghost, played by the ubiquitous Sanjay Dutt, a haunted house seemingly borrowed from Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and a powerful mother figure played by Zarina Wahab. But there is an overkill of VFX, much of which makes the movie look like an amateur video game. Memo to filmmakers of India: the VFX era is over. Please come back to making movies with real people in real settings.
