DC: A Time to Rage

I have a theory about women actors in India. The film industry they belong to has no clue how to use them appropriately. Case in point: Wamiqa Gabbi who just recently spent an entire movie with Akshay Kumar where she had to lip sync to a song and utter inane dialogues.
In DC, Arun Maheswaran’s retelling of Devdas, Gabbi plays Chandra, a sex worker, to Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Das, a gangster, and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy’s Parvathy, a singer. And Gabbi gets a part she can flesh out. We’ve seen many adaptations of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Devdas, including Anurag Kashyap’s Dev.D among recent hits. But Matheswaran adds his own spin to the story, with some style and lots of oomph and rage from Gabbi. Such articulation of female anger is rarely seen in Indian cinema and is worthy of Bonnie and Clyde. Anirudh Ravichander’s score makes you hear the movie as well as feel it, while the colours are earthy and realistic. These are outlaws one is tempted to root for.
