Her husband (Anshumaan Pushkar) is a performative supportive husband, who wants a medal merely because he married a woman outside his caste. Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law make passive-aggressive demands on her financially and emotionally. Her senior at work gets her to accept blame for a sensitive leak to the media in exchange for leave. She is ASI Babita Singh, played by Nimisha Sajayan, in Babita Singh Reporting. Babita has got the job, we are told, on compassionate grounds because her father, also a policeman, died in the line of duty. Add to that her in-laws and her husband giving her digs for her weight, and blaming her for not being able to conceive two years into her marriage.

Her friend from school, Bansi (Barun Sobti) had stood by her back home in Rewa but he dies after she goes home for her sister-in-law’s godhbharai. As Babita negotiates being her in-laws’ unpaid domestic help, being gaslighted by her husband, and being viewed with suspicion by old friends, she tries to uncover what happened to Bansi. Babita Singh Reporting is produced by Sudip Sharma who created Kohrra and Paatal Lok, so it’s no surprise that the end reveals everything about the randomness of life and death. Sajayan speaks with her eyes. When she rebels with quiet purpose and steely force, we watch from the sidelines as a tigress awakes.
