THE PREMISE OF Alpha is interesting if unoriginal. An ‘Alpha’ soldier, injected with a serum that gives her superpowers, is raised by a diabolical soldier gone rogue. She proceeds to kill on command, not only because she is trained to obey but also because it gives her pleasure. Unfortunately, the plot just goes beta from then on. There is some garbled attempt at linking it with Indian mythology with the Alpha soldier called Sita (Alia Bhatt) and her twin called Durga (Sharvari). Durga has a normal life in Spain, allowing Yash Raj Films to execute a dance number on foreign shores, an absolute essential in their spy universe.

There is lots of feminist posturing, including references to ‘Ziddi Girls’ (stubborn women) shattering ceilings, leaving blood on the floor. Anil Kapoor plays a soldier-turned RAW chief going toe-to-toe with his enemy played by Bobby Deol. The movie is so dull in its execution and lame in its writing that even Sharvari’s natural cheerfulness pales. Bhatt tries to kick and fly, shoot and scoot, but in an age when CGI is being replaced by natural effects, it looks unreal even for a fantasy spy universe. Actor Jodie Foster said that the 2025 movie F1 looked as if it was AI generated. So does Alpha.
