Say you plan to buy a new car and want help with options to make a decision. Ask one of many generative AI bots out there and they will respond with a short answer and some details. But what if you wanted a comprehensive report in the manner that professional consultants do? OpenAI once again rewrote the rules of the game when it announced the launch of Deep Research, a model that will act as a personal research analyst. This the model does through something akin to reasoning. Deep Research is a product targeted at not just regular consumers but also professionals who require research assistance. The sectors it gave as examples were finance, policy and even engineering. Unlike the usual models, results here are not immediate, taking anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, but this is still many hours less than what a human being doing the same task would take. Even as it is coming up with the report, Deep Research shows in real time the ‘thinking’ processes happening within it. It is not perfect, still being prone to inaccuracies, but is far more precise than other OpenAI models. It is only available to paid upper tier Pro subscribers in the US at the moment but will get rolled out elsewhere soon.
DeepSeek BANS
No sooner did DeepSeek upend the AI market and its economies, than it began to taste the fate of Chinese companies like TikTok which have been subject to bans. In the US, the Texas governor issued an order that no government devices could use it. In Australia, too, the government decided that DeepSeek would not be allowed into its devices or systems.
Indian GPU
Nvidia has a monopoly on GPUs, the chips that are powering the AI revolution. This gives the US power over who will get access to them, an uncomfortable position for other countries. India has announced that it is moving to develop GPUs of its own and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave a time frame of three to five years for its fruition.
Grok It
Only users of X, the Elon Musk-owned social media platform, could so far access its generative AI bot Grok. But now it is being released in the Google Play Store for everyone. Grok, in keeping with Musk’s emphasis on free speech, is touted as not being politically correct and willing to answer all questions thrown at it, unlike other generative AI models.
