Superman | Director: James Gunn | Cast: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult | English
Superman has always been the goofier of the two great DC superheroes, Batman and Superman. For a certain generation (ahem, such as mine) the 1978 version starring Christopher Reeve has defined every Superman reinvention since, both because of his presence onscreen and because of what happened to Reeve subsequently. In the 2010s movies, Henry Cavill’s Superman was more manly and more remote. This year, under director James Gunn, David Corenswet makes our superhero younger, odder, and cooler, with Krypto the Superdog for company. He is still saving the world, flying around in his red underpants and red cape, but his Clark Kent seems genuinely socially awkward, as a boy born as Kal-El would be. The villain Lex Luthor, played by the great Gene Hackman in 1978, is a role Nicholas Hoult digs into, while the tiny Rachel Brosnahan is a spirited Lois Lane. Yes the film does have a picture-perfect gloss but its snow, steel and glass aesthetic seems just perfect for a very hot summer. Corenswet comes complete with mile-wide biceps and the perfect forehead curl, so we can expect him to stay the course for this version of the franchise. Finding the perfect feet to fit the red boots is not easy, so well done James Gunn. We’ll take the red cape over the MAGA red tie anytime.
