She was sunlight and buttered toast, he was like a Greek omelette. Together they made for an odd couple that nearly broke 30 years of friendship. Tine Fey writes a soulful series of three couples who meet four times a year. There is a couple on the brink of a divorce where the wife doesn’t know it, and is so spectacularly ignorant of it that she organises a vow renewal ceremony as a surprise. There is another couple: gay, interracial, with an excitable Italian and a chic Black man. And then there is Tina Fey and Will Forte, playing an empty nester couple who have settled into a happy companionship, so happy that complaining is their version of sex. Then a young woman with the personality of squat enters this cosy club with her vegan, woke friends. Instead of generational dissing, the show evolves into something much more—a meditation on lifelong friendships, relationship regrets and the power of forgiveness. The Four Seasons, borrowed from Vivaldi’s quartet signifies the changing tenor of life. There will be divorce, there will be marital therapy, there will be new love, but there will always be friends who will have each other’s back.
