A global study, ‘Trust, attitudes and use of artificial intelligence’ that surveyed 48,340 people in 47 countries found that Indians were among those who trusted AI the most. In fact, India had the highest usage with 92 per cent. If the global average for willingness to trust AI was 46 per cent, for India it was 76 per cent. When it came to acceptance or approval, it was higher at 90 per cent. There was a curious element in the study’s findings that emerging economies were much more trusting of AI than developed ones, as evident in India’s relationship with it. As many as 86 per cent of those surveyed from the country had either experienced AI themselves or seen how it could benefit users. Indians were however also cautious about the new technology. The study was conducted by the consultancy firm KPMG and its press release said, “Despite the benefits, 78% Indians are concerned about negative outcomes from AI, and 54% have personally experienced or observed such outcomes, with the top concern being the loss of human interaction (60%). Nearly half (48%) Indians believe AI regulation is necessary, 41% are aware of existing AI regulations and policies, and 73% believe current safeguards
are sufficient.”
Skype Shutdown
Skype, which once ruled the online calling market, shut down on May 5, in keeping with a timeline that its owner, Microsoft, had earlier given. Launched in 2003, it had immediately become a rage for the free calling it provided across geographies. Skype had just not been able to evolve into the age of mobile phones and apps and its users would now be shifted to Microsoft Teams.
Amazon’s Touch
Amazon has announced that it has a new robot that is able to feel through touch. This helps in its warehouses to find out what is there on a shelf and pick it up after identification. Touch sensing is a relatively new leap in robotics and uses sensors and machine learning. Amazon has already started using these robots in two of its fulfilment centres.
Name Buzz
Elon Musk changed his name to “Gorklon Rust” on his X handle and created instant frenzy around it. It was accompanied by a distorted image of the Grok logo, gorklon thus being inferred to be a take on Grok. Gorklon Rust is also a meme coin and Musk has for long been an evangelist of cryptocurrencies. It is not the first time he has created buzz by changing his name and never gives an explanation.
