WITCHES AND MISSING children have been the oldest trope in fairy tales, which as we all know by now, are nothing but the earliest horror stories we imbibed. In a classroom run by Justine Gandy in Maybrook, a small town in America, 17 children disappear one morning. One child remains, as does Justine Gandy (Julia Garner). As the parents of the missing children get agitated, Justine is the one they focus their anger on, especially Archer Graff (Josh Brolin). The film has multiple stories and keeps running back and forth in timelines. Justine, Archer and a police officer with alcohol problems, Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), then try to piece the mystery together, at which point it becomes a thriller. A forbidding dark forest, a ghoulish face in the dreams, and a chilling basement. What more does one need?
