What do you think of a movie where the best is at the end? Where the two spies ride into the sunset on their superbikes? Where there is a scene that shows the beginning of another to-be-released spy franchise, ‘Alpha’? It is a great hook to keep audiences glued to the end because the rest of the film is a yawn, despite taking us on a whirligig from Manali to Berlin, from Rome to Davos, with the two superspies weaponising everything from boats to icicles. That is when they are not talking of how much they’ve admired each other since they were teenagers in an orphanage. The scenes are charged with homoerotic undertones which probably makes War 2 the first bromance on steroids. Apart from sidelining the beauteous Kiara Advani who looks as smashing in a uniform as she does in a bikini, the film features a confederation of enemies arraigned against Bharat Mata, from Sri Lanka to Bangladesh to Russia to everyone’s favourite neighbour, Pakistan. There is also an enemy within who is willing to sell out the nation to acquire power. For some reason, Hrithik Roshan is forever chewing a toothpick and Jr NTR is always wearing a scowl. For the audience, the film is as confusing as the state of the world’s geopolitics.
