A scene from Maaman
Maaman | Director: Prasanth Pandiyaraj | Cast: Soori, Aishwarya Lekshmi | (Tamil)
There is drama and there is melodrama. Maaman, adapted from a story by Soori, is the latter type about a family that fights together staying together. Uncle dotes on sister's baby, who grows into a large boy, until tragedy strikes and they are separated. Soori's expressive face covers every emotion in the playbook, but there is only so much weeping that one can take on account of the overgrown boy. The story is predictable and overwhelmingly sentimental, but Soori's evolution as an actor is undeniable. Give in to the excess and there is even a sliver of enjoyment in the land of too muchness.
