From Mass to Premium: India’s Two-Wheeler Market Undergoes Structural Shift

India’s two-wheeler market is shifting gears, and moving decisively up the value curve.

According to a Yes Securities report, premiumisation is set to drive growth across both motorcycles and scooters, even as the sub-125cc segment steadily loses ground. Upgrade demand, favourable pricing dynamics and improving consumer sentiment are accelerating the transition toward higher-displacement vehicles.

Scooters are at the heart of this shift. Scooterisation has reached a record 36% penetration in YTD FY26, overtaking the previous peak of around 33% and signalling a lasting change in consumer preference. When adjusted for unreported electric two-wheeler volumes, scooter penetration climbs further to 38.4%. Over FY20–25, scooter volumes have grown at a healthy 4.1% CAGR, outpacing the broader two-wheeler industry.

The momentum is being powered by multiple tailwinds: rapid urbanisation, inadequate public transport, deeper penetration into under-served states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and the eastern region, and sustained demand from e-commerce, delivery services and two-wheeler taxi operators.

Premiumisation is now the dominant growth theme across scooters and motorcycles alike. In metros and Tier-1 cities, 125cc scooters command a hefty 45–50% market share, driven by feature-rich models and visible value upgrades that justify higher price points.

Motorcycles, which have seen muted demand over the past four years, are also undergoing a clear transformation. Growth is increasingly shifting toward higher engine capacities, with premium motorcycles—especially those above 300cc—emerging as a key driver on the back of aspirational demand and new launches.

The numbers underscore the shift. The 350cc segment has hit an all-time high, accounting for 5.7% of total two-wheeler volumes and 36% of premium motorcycle sales in YTD FY26, up sharply from just 2% and 16%, respectively, in FY15.

The report concludes that this is not a cyclical blip but a structural change. As consumers continue to trade up, the share of sub-125cc vehicles is expected to shrink further, cementing premiumisation as the long-term growth engine of India’s two-wheeler industry.
