FOR OVER 34 crore members, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has finally moved from a patchwork of regional servers to a single, national digital backbone. EPFO 2.01, launched in early July, is the biggest technology upgrade in the scheme’s history and promises faster claims, cleaner data, and a unified experience.

The core of EPFO 2.01 is the migration to a Centralised IT Enabled System (CITES). Instead of each regional office maintaining its own database, all member records now live in one national database. This means any authorised EPFO office across India can process a service request, not just the office where the account is rooted. Members can approach any EPFO counter for assistance, removing old geographical restrictions.

EPFO 2.01 introduces a Unified Member Portal where subscribers can view their PF balance, claim status, membership details, pensionable service records and benefits availed through a single dashboard. Claims now undergo automated pre-validation, helping members spot errors before submission and reducing rejections.

Annual interest credit is now end-to-end auto-processed. For FY26, the 8.25 per cent rate (about `1.44 lakh crore) will be verified and credited with minimal manual intervention. The auto-settlement limit for advance claims has jumped from `1 lakh to `5 lakh for fully KYC-compliant, validated claims. Withdrawal categories have been streamlined from 13 to three: essential needs, housing needs and special circumstances, with eligible members able to withdraw up to 75 per cent of their total PF balance.

For job changers with Aadhaar-linked UANs, PF transfers are now automatic, eliminating separate transfer applications. Members can also respond to EPFO queries online, further cutting paperwork and delays.

Together, these features make EPFO 2.01 less about “new rules” and more about a new operating model: centralised, automated and member-centric.
