Desi boys are the flavour of the season. In Overcompensating, as young Benny goes from Idaho to Yates, a fictional university, to be initiated into all the strange rituals of being a freshman, we see his carefully constructed identity as a philandering jock coming apart. Coming out of the closet has rarely looked as funny as it is in the series that refuses to take itself seriously even during the most traumatic, life changing events. Joined in his journey of self discovery is Carmen, a Jersey girl and a Latina, with her own set of tragedies. Benny is torn between being her friend and her supposed boyfriend, even as aforementioned desi boy Rish Shah’s deliciousness calls out to him. Beer pong, secret societies, freshman sex, and finding one’s identity are dealt with the same sunlit energy. It’s fresh and refreshing.
